Laurel Hill Cemetery, on the high bluffs above the Schuylkill River, was one of the first rural cemeteries in America, laid out in the 1830s with winding paths and landscaped lots meant to invite visitors as much as mourners. This color engraving shows the north section as a formal plan, a map of the grounds that would have helped a reader find a particular family plot or monument. It appeared as an illustration in R.A. Smith's illustrated guide to the cemetery, published in 1852, when such guides were popular with Philadelphians who treated the grounds as a place for Sunday strolls and quiet reflection.
