The subject is the Philadelphia Exchange, the merchants' hall that William Strickland designed in the Greek Revival style and that opened in the early 1830s near the city's waterfront. Its columned front and large public room made it a gathering place for shipping and commercial men, who came to trade, trade news and settle accounts. The record gives the date as c1835 Jan. 9, but that date comes from an unverified catalog card, so it is best read as approximate for a view of a building that was then new. Views like this were popular with merchants and visitors who wanted a picture of the city's commercial core.
