This drawing shows a plan and elevation for Girard College, the Philadelphia school that later grew out of the will of merchant and banker Stephen Girard, who died in 1831. The catalog dates the sheet between 1803 and 1827, so it predates the college's founding and probably records an early design study. It appears in the Bulfinch sketchbook, and while it has sometimes been credited to the Boston architect Charles Bulfinch, that attribution has not been confirmed. Its value lies in showing how early architects imagined a large institutional building before the Greek Revival campus was finished in the 1830s and 1840s.
