The Girard House was a large hotel in Philadelphia, named for the banker and merchant Stephen Girard, whose estate helped finance it after his death in 1831. This wood engraving from 1852 shows the building as an illustration in *Gleason's Pictorial Drawing-Room Companion*, the Boston illustrated weekly that ran wood engravings of American cities and buildings in the early 1850s. Printed views like this one were a common way for readers far from Philadelphia to see its streetscapes and public buildings. The record's details come from an older caption card and have not been independently verified, so the exact placement and appearance of the hotel are best checked against other sources.
