Looking out over Philadelphia from the grounds of Girard College, this view puts the city's dense rooftops and church spires in the foreground of a skyline that was still taking shape. Girard College, the boarding school founded under the will of the merchant and banker Stephen Girard, who died in 1831, sat on a large tract at the city's northwestern edge, so its grounds offered a vantage point over the growing city. Views like this one were popular in the nineteenth century, when Philadelphia was among the largest and most industrious cities in the country and its expansion was reshaping the landscape around the Schuylkill and Delaware rivers.
