Chestnut Street, one of Philadelphia's main downtown thoroughfares, is the subject here, with streetcar tracks running along the roadway and commercial buildings lining the block. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 8 x 10 inch glass negative around 1905 to 1906, sent photographers across the country to document cities, rail lines and scenic places, and street views like this one capture the busy mix of trolleys, shops and pedestrians that defined American urban life in the early twentieth century. Because the negative is a glass plate, it preserves fine detail that makes the storefronts and street traffic worth studying closely.
