The Union League of Philadelphia was founded in 1862 as a club of loyalists who backed the Union during the Civil War, and its clubhouse on South Broad Street became one of the city's best-known private social halls. This 8 x 10 inch glass dry plate negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed American cities, landmarks, and institutions from the 1890s into the 1920s. The record dates the plate to about 1905, based on the company's 1906 catalog, so it captures the building as it looked in the early twentieth century. Architectural views like this one are useful for tracing how Philadelphia's Broad Street clubs and public buildings were presented to the public at the time.
