Named for the city of Philadelphia, this cruiser was built at the William Cramp & Sons yard there and commissioned in 1890, one of the steel-hulled warships that helped modernize the U.S. Navy in the years before the Spanish-American War. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made large-format views of American places and scenes around the turn of the century, produced this 8 x 10 inch glass negative of the vessel. Its record dates it to between 1890 and 1901, so it captures the ship during her early service, when the navy was still building its reputation as a steam-powered fighting force.
