Built at the Cramp shipyard in Philadelphia in the late 1880s, this steel cruiser carried the city's name into the new steam-and-steel fleet that the United States was assembling at the time. Its long hull and clean lines show the shift away from wooden sailing warships. The Detroit Publishing Company, known for its views of American cities, landmarks and scenery, made this large glass negative for its catalog, so the picture preserves a documentary record of the ship during its years of active service.
