The Detroit Publishing Company made this view on an 8 by 10 inch glass plate, a large format that captured fine detail in the cruiser's hull, masts, and rigging. The ship was the USS Philadelphia, a steel protected cruiser built at the Cramp shipyard in Philadelphia and commissioned in 1890. It belonged to the generation of steel warships that helped the U.S. Navy move away from wooden sailing vessels. The company's photographers traveled widely to record ships, harbors, and scenic places, and their views were sold as souvenirs and catalog prints.
