This picture pairs a naval officer with the steel cruiser *Philadelphia*, a vessel that joined the U.S. Navy's new fleet of modern warships in the early 1890s. Rear Admiral Bancroft Gherardi (1832-1903) was a career naval officer who rose through the ranks after the Civil War, and portraits like this one often tied senior officers to the ships they commanded. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made the glass negative, sold views of American cities, landmarks and the military, so the image reflects the era's interest in showing the country's growing naval strength.
