This small pencil and watercolor sketch shows Rear Admiral John A. Dahlgren's flagship *Philadelphia* off Charleston, South Carolina, in 1863, with signal flags flying from its rigging. Dahlgren took command of the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron that summer and used the ship as his base for the long effort to close Charleston's harbor and reduce its defenses, including Fort Sumter. Drawings like this, made on modest paper, often served as quick records of naval life during the war, and the flags in the picture hint at the constant signaling that kept a blockade fleet coordinated.
