The steel protected cruiser USS *Philadelphia* appears here as a glass negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its wide range of American views. William Cramp & Sons launched the ship in 1889 at its yard in Philadelphia, and she was commissioned in 1890 as part of a program to rebuild a U.S. Navy that had shrunk considerably after the Civil War. The catalog date of 1890 to 1901 places the plate in the ship's early years of service, when new American cruisers were a source of national pride.
