The gatehouse at the Harrison estate in Lime Kiln Park, Philadelphia, is the subject of this view, which records the entrance to a private property at the edge of the city's parkland. The picture was made as a glass dry plate negative, 8 by 10 inches, between 1900 and 1915, a period when large-format plates gave fine detail in architecture and landscape. It comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that sold views of American cities, resorts and country estates. Its architecture and the stone and iron of its entrance are worth a close look.
