This wood engraving shows a gathering of the Grand Army of the Republic in Philadelphia, drawn from a sketch by F.H. Taylor and published in *Harper's Weekly* on November 1, 1879. The Grand Army of the Republic was a fraternal organization of Union Civil War veterans, founded in 1866, and by the late 1870s its encampments and parades drew large crowds. Because periodicals of the day could not easily reproduce photographs, weeklies like *Harper's* sent artists to events, and their sketches were then cut into wood blocks by engravers. The result is a record of how veterans' public ceremonies looked to contemporary readers.
