The 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition, held in St. Louis, is the event this panorama records, and its sweep across the fairgrounds captures the scale of an undertaking that drew visitors from around the world. The fair marked the centennial of the Louisiana Purchase of 1803, which is why it is often grouped with other centennial celebrations, though its focus was on the territory's growth and the young century's technology. Worth noticing is how the wide format lets the viewer take in the grand exhibition buildings and their landscaped grounds at once, a view that a single photograph of one pavilion could not offer.
