The Louisiana Purchase Exposition, held in St. Louis in 1904, drew visitors from around the world to a fairground of palaces and lagoons laid out across Forest Park. A bird's-eye view like this one shows the scale of the grounds at a glance, with its formal courts, the great Festival Hall, and the wide waterways that were meant to make the fair look like a city of white buildings. The fair marked the centennial of the 1803 Louisiana Purchase and showcased new technology, from electric lighting to early exhibits of wireless and automobiles. Its layout, planned with the architects who later shaped the City Beautiful movement, is worth noticing for how much it influenced American city planning afterward.
