The Columbian Exposition opened in Chicago in 1893 to mark the four hundredth anniversary of Columbus's arrival in the Americas, and this aerial-style view lays out the whole fairground at once. Its ornate white buildings cluster around the Court of Honor and the long lagoons, with the classical design guided by architects such as Daniel Burnham and the landscape shaped by Frederick Law Olmsted. Viewed from above, the picture shows how the fair was arranged as a planned city of temporary palaces, an approach that influenced American city planning for decades. It is worth looking for the Ferris Wheel and the Midway, which drew crowds beyond the formal grounds.
