Dated to 1891 and tied to the firm Kurz & Allison on its shelflist card, this view of the World's Columbian Exposition was made while Chicago was still preparing for the fair, and the date and attribution are not fully verified. The exposition opened in 1893 in Jackson Park to mark the 400th anniversary of Columbus's arrival in the Americas. Its planned White City of white, classical-style buildings went on to influence American city planning for decades. Images issued before the gates opened show how promoters wanted the fair understood before visitors ever saw it.
