Rows of trained animals stand lined up beside their trainers, with clowns and other performers mixed in, in this view from the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. The fair opened in 1893 to mark the 400th anniversary of Columbus's arrival in the Americas, and its white neoclassical buildings and amusements along the Midway Plaisance drew large crowds. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a Washington photographer, documented the fair, though the date given here, 1892-93, is an estimate from the original caption card.
