A long boat moving along a Venetian-style canal sets this view apart from the fair's many views of its grand buildings. The World's Columbian Exposition opened in Chicago in 1893 in Jackson Park, marking the 400th anniversary of Columbus's voyage, and its planners built a temporary city of white classical buildings that earned it the nickname "White City." Its lagoons and canals were meant to evoke Venice, and gondola-style boats carried visitors past the palaces. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a photographer who documented the fair, is credited with the image, which is dated to about 1892 to 1893.
