The record names a pavilion at the World's Columbian Exposition, the Chicago fair that opened in 1893 to mark the 400th anniversary of Columbus reaching the Americas. The title does not say which building is shown, so the picture is best read as one of the many structures that lined the fair's grounds in Jackson Park. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a Washington photographer who documented the exposition's architecture and exhibits, made the series this print belongs to. Its neoclassical "White City" buildings, set around a lagoon and built largely of staff, gave the fair its nickname and shaped American ideas about civic design for decades.
