This bird's-eye panorama looks down on the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, a view that shows how the fair's grounds were laid out as a single planned composition. The exposition marked the 400th anniversary of Columbus's arrival in the Americas, and its architects, led by Daniel Burnham, built a formal core of white neoclassical palaces around basins and waterways in Jackson Park. The gleaming buildings earned the fair its nickname, the "White City." The caption card's tags also list obelisks, a reminder of the classical ornament that ran through the fair's design.
