The cover of this 1904 sheet music, "Salute to St. Louis," ties a march to the year the city hosted the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, better known as the St. Louis World's Fair. Published as a two-step, the dance form that was hugely popular in American parlors and ballrooms at the time, the piece offered fairgoers and home pianists a way to bring the celebration indoors. Sheet music covers from this period were often colorful advertisements meant to catch the eye in a music shop, so the artwork here is worth studying for its typography and imagery as much as for the tune inside.
