Alphonse Mucha, the Czech-born artist best known for his Art Nouveau work in Paris, designed this color lithograph to promote the Louisiana Purchase Exposition at St. Louis, which ran from April 30 to November 30, 1904. The fair marked the centennial of the 1803 Louisiana Purchase, and this poster was printed in Paris in 1903 to reach American audiences before the fair opened. Its flowing lines and ornamental style show how European design was enlisted to sell an American event. The poster's stated aim, promotion in the United States, makes it a useful example of how world's fairs competed for attention across the Atlantic.
