Among the many views of the 1867 Exposition Universelle in Paris, this stereograph focuses on the Italian section of the statuary and paintings displays. The fair, held on the Champ de Mars under Napoleon III, drew exhibitors from across Europe and beyond. Italy, unified only a few years earlier in 1861, used the event to present its artistic traditions to an international audience. Stereo cards like this one, viewed through a hand viewer, let fairgoers and armchair travelers at home move through the galleries and study the sculpture on display.
