Stereo cards like this one were meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, which fused two slightly offset photographs into a single three-dimensional scene. This view shows the Trocadero entrance to the colonial section of the Exposition Universelle of 1900, with the fair's grounds and the Eiffel Tower, built for the 1889 exhibition, rising in the background across the Seine. The fair drew millions of visitors, and its colonial exhibits presented France's overseas territories to the public as a showcase of empire. The card was copyrighted by B.L. Singley in 1900 and later came into the collection of Marian S. Carson.
