Here a band led by John Philip Sousa performs on a bandstand at the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1900, the title noting the band's signature march, "The Stars and Stripes Forever." Sousa, who had composed the march in 1896, brought his ensemble to Paris during the fair, which drew millions of visitors and showcased technology and culture from around the world. The picture is a stereograph, a card with two nearly identical photographs meant to be viewed through a stereoscope for a sense of depth. Photographer William H. Rau's copyright notice and the War Photograph and Exhibition Company's publisher credit show how such views were made and sold to a public eager for images of distant events.
