Sousa and his band are the particular focus here, shown performing on the Esplanade des Invalides during the 1900 Exposition universelle in Paris. John Philip Sousa, the American bandleader known for his marches, brought his ensemble to the fair, and the stereograph captures one of the open-air bandstands that drew crowds to the grounds that year. The card was published by the War Photograph and Exhibition Company and registered for copyright, which was common for stereo views sold to a mass market of home viewers. Stereographs like this one, viewed through a hand-held device to create a three-dimensional effect, were a popular way for people far from Paris to see the fair.
