The Château d'Eau, a monumental water palace built for the 1900 Exposition Universelle, anchored the plaza shown here, and its cascades were a centerpiece of the fair's grounds in Paris. The record dates this photochrom print to between about 1890 and 1900, so it may have been made before the fair opened in April 1900, perhaps to show the site as planned. The photochrom process layered several lithographic stones to add color to a black-and-white photograph, giving the scene a painted quality. Prints like this were popular travel souvenirs at the time, bringing views of distant monuments into homes.
