The title points to the Exposition Universelle of 1900, the world's fair that opened in Paris in spring 1900 on the Champ de Mars and along the Seine. The record dates the print to between about 1890 and 1900, so it may have been made while the fair was being planned or built, when it captured the city's expectations rather than the finished exhibition. The photochrom process, a Swiss method that used photographs as the base for hand-finished color lithographs, gave these views a soft, painterly color that made them popular with travelers and collectors of the period.
