Unlike many views of the 1867 Exposition Universelle that show its grounds or pavilions from outside, this stereograph turns the viewer toward the interior of one of its buildings, where the exhibits were arranged. The fair, held in Paris that year, was meant to display the industry, art, and craft of nations around the world, and sculpture and manufactured goods shared the same galleries. Stereo cards like this one were sold as souvenirs, so the paired images would have given viewers a sense of depth and a lasting record of the fair's displays.
