Few stereographs from the 1867 Exposition Universelle capture its garden side as directly as this view of a grotto in the Horticultural Gardens. The fair, held on the Champ de Mars in Paris, drew millions of visitors and showcased industry, art, and design from across the world under Napoleon III. Artificial grottoes and rockwork were a favorite feature of Second Empire landscape design, and stereo cards like this one were sold in large numbers, letting viewers at home move through the fair's displays in three dimensions. The record gives no photographer's name, so the card's maker and exact vantage point remain uncertain.
