This stereograph shows the Gallery d'Iéna, a building at the 1878 Exposition Universelle in Paris, which the French government staged on the Trocadéro hill across the Seine to display industry, art, and empire. The card was published by the Kilburn Brothers of Littleton, New Hampshire, a firm that sold large numbers of stereo views for parlor viewers in the United States and abroad. Its maker's name suggests the card was sold as a souvenir of the fair to American buyers who would never make the trip to Paris. Because the record's details come from an old caption card and have not been independently verified, the exact date and placement of the view are worth checking against other sources.
