Looking down on the Champ de Mars, this official view shows the 1867 Exposition Universelle in Paris as a set of concentric rings: the great oval exhibition hall, its gardens, and the pavilions around them. The fair was Napoleon III's showcase for French industry and for work from many other countries, and it drew millions of visitors that year. The drawing is credited to Eugène Cicéri and Philippe Benoist, and the printing house of Lemercier produced the lithograph, which was then issued by Goupil in Paris, Berlin, and New York, a sign of how widely the fair was followed abroad. The hand coloring adds a bright, decorative quality that the plain black-and-white plans of the period lack.
