The record links this view to the fountains at the St. Louis fair, and the caption card points to an 1904 exhibition, though the 1905 date is unverified. The event was the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, which ran through much of 1904 in Forest Park to mark the centennial of the 1803 land purchase. Its water features, including the cascades and the Grand Basin, were among the most admired parts of the grounds. The numbered entry and the Herman L. Wittemann name suggest the image belongs to a larger group of fair views.
