Few fairs of the era are as closely tied to a single tragedy as the Pan-American Exposition, which opened in Buffalo, New York, in May 1901. Organizers meant it to promote trade and goodwill across the Western Hemisphere, but it closed early that September after President William McKinley was shot at its Temple of Music and died days later. The picture comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely recording scenic places and public events. The record's details come from a caption card and have not been independently verified, so the exact view is worth checking against other sources.
