Buffalo, New York, hosted the Pan-American Exposition from May to November 1901, a fair meant to showcase trade and progress across the Western Hemisphere. Its grounds were lit by electricity on a scale that impressed visitors, and the fair is also remembered for the assassination of President William McKinley there in September, at the Temple of Music. The Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers and color printers documented American cities, resorts and expositions in the early twentieth century, made this view, offering a glimpse of how the fairgrounds were presented to the public.
