The Pan-American Exposition opened in Buffalo, New York, in May 1901, a fair devoted to trade and goodwill among the nations of the Western Hemisphere. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced a large body of commercial views of American places and events, recorded the grounds, and this print is one of those views. The fair is also remembered as the site of President William McKinley's shooting at the Temple of Music in September, an event that cast a shadow over its final weeks. Its planners relied heavily on architecture and electric illumination, which made the grounds a natural subject for photographers of the period.
