The Pan American Exposition opened in Buffalo, New York, in May 1901, and this view belongs to a fair built around electric light, with its buildings and grounds lit up at night. The Detroit Publishing Company, known for its travel views and tinted prints, recorded many such fairgrounds scenes. The exposition is also remembered as the site of President William McKinley's shooting at the Temple of Music in September 1901. He died eight days later, and the tragedy shadows the fair's history.
