The Pan-American Exposition opened in Buffalo, New York, in May 1901 to celebrate trade and friendship among the nations of the Western Hemisphere. Its most famous landmark was the illuminated Electric Tower, which drew crowds at night. The fair closed in November 1901 after President William McKinley was shot at its Temple of Music in September. The Detroit Publishing Company, which documented American cities, landscapes and events for decades, made this photograph, and the record's caption notes are brief, so the exact view is best understood as one of many images of the grounds that year.
