Three women sit together on a bench at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York, a quiet moment set against the fair's large crowds and monumental buildings. The exposition ran from May to November 1901 and was devoted to trade and progress across the Western Hemisphere, with its illuminated Electric Tower and white neoclassical halls. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a photographer known for her careful documentary work, made the picture, which offers a more intimate counterpoint to the fair's grander views. That same year, the exposition became a site of tragedy when President William McKinley was shot there in September.
