The Pan American Exposition opened in Buffalo, New York, in 1901 as a showcase of the Western Hemisphere's industry and art, and this view belongs to the fair's more exotic side, where the caption card tags it under "Orient" and "Amusement Parks." The Detroit Publishing Company, which sent photographers across the country and sold its views widely, documented the fair's crowds and exhibits for a public eager to see such spectacles. The Exposition is remembered today partly because President William McKinley was shot there in September 1901, and it closed later that year. Note that the caption data is unverified, so details of this particular scene should be checked against the catalog record.
