Few fair views from 1876 reach as far as this one, which takes in the Fairmount Park grounds and the countryside beyond them rather than stopping at the exhibition buildings. Viewed from high above, the layout of the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia is laid out in one sweep, showing how the great halls, galleries, and gardens were arranged across the park. The fair opened in May 1876 to mark the hundredth anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and drew millions of visitors before it closed that November. Bird's-eye views like this one were a popular way to show such a complex site to people who could not visit it.
