Cleveland, then serving his second nonterm-consecutive stint as president, appears alongside the exposition's buildings, a pairing that signals how closely the federal government tied itself to the Chicago fair. On May 1, 1893, he opened the World's Columbian Exposition from Washington by sending an electrical signal that set the machinery running in Jackson Park. The lithograph was printed by the Knapp Company of New York around 1893, and its copyright deposit suggests it was sold as a souvenir. The fair's white neoclassical buildings, later nicknamed the White City, gave the event its lasting image.
