Sea Cliff, a village on Long Island's North Shore, is the subject of this silkscreen, and its poster makes an unusual pitch: a seaside bluff village at about 250 feet, touted as free of mosquitoes. The village sponsored the design, which was produced under the Works Progress Administration's Federal Art Project in New York. It was printed to draw visitors from the 1939 New York World's Fair, then in its first season at Flushing Meadows, to a day trip on the Sound. WPA posters of this kind were often made by silkscreen, a method that suited bold flat color and simple lettering.
