The crowd in this picture is pressed around one of the television sets that the Radio Corporation of America showed at the 1939 New York World's Fair, in Flushing Meadows, Queens. RCA's pavilion was among the fair's most popular attractions, and its televisions were a novelty for most visitors, since regular broadcasting had only just begun in the New York area that year. The photograph comes from the New York World-Telegram and the Sun newspaper collection, a large body of press pictures now held by the Library of Congress, and it captures the fair's crowds as much as the machine itself.
