Currier & Ives, the New York firm known for quickly marketing topical scenes, issued this lithograph of the fire that swept through Boston on November 9 and 10, 1872. The blaze began in a crowded commercial district, and wooden buildings and strong winds carried it across a large part of the city's business core, leaving many firms and workers without premises or income. Prints like this one gave a wide public a dramatic view of the disaster, and the image still shows how the firm combined news value with popular spectacle.
