Few American city fires of the nineteenth century were as widely illustrated as the blaze that tore through downtown Boston on November 9 and 10, 1872. It started in a commercial district near Summer Street and, pushed by strong winds, burned across much of the city's business core over more than a day. The loss shook the city, and the rebuilding that followed changed the streets, insurance practice and building rules of the area. Color prints like this one carried news of the disaster to readers well beyond New England.
