The fire that began near Summer Street on the evening of November 9, 1872, burned through much of Boston's commercial core over the following day. It destroyed several hundred buildings across roughly 60 acres, and crews from neighboring cities came by rail to help. The disaster exposed weak water pressure and inadequate equipment, and it pushed the city toward a stronger professional fire department and tighter building rules. Views of the burned district like this one now help show how much of the old downtown was lost.
